Basileia Update

NJIT/RU at Basileia Week 2

Hello Friends!

Thank you so much for responding and praying while we were at Basileia. It was an extremely joyful time to be serving students and leading them in planning, worship, and inviting them to continue to say "YES!" to Jesus. Speaking of which, as you may have remembered, I mentioned that we had non-christian students attending camp with us. And I wanted to share the great news that we saw a total of 6 new conversions at camp during week 2...in which 2 of them were from NEWARK!!! Say what?!?! WHOooOoOoo!!!!! This is the first set of conversions we have witnessed since I've been on staff with InterVarsity at Newark. (yes, first set...we are definitely anticipating more this year!) It is such a blessing to see students making decisions to move from darkness to light.

Would you continue to pray with us as student leaders are in the process of making plans for the upcoming school year? We are looking and anticipating God to do GREAT things in Newark and we can't wait to see what God has in store. Student leaders are extremely pumped and excited. We (the staff team) are extremely pumped and excited...and we pray that YOU (our partners and supporters) are extremely pumped and excited for this coming school year! May HIS kingdom come, HIS will be done, on the campuses in Newark as it is in heaven.

Newark Staff Team!

Thank You!

It is because of your support that I was able to witness such an awesome event at Basileia. It is because of your partnership that I am able to continue to train, challenge, and invite students to say "YES!" to Jesus. It has been an incredible journey to witness the transformation of students at NJIT, Rutgers, and Essex.

I am hoping to continue to serve God in this way, but I am currently $6,000 short of my financial goal this fiscal year (It ends this month!!!). Will you please pray for God to continually provide for the financial needs of my ministry? I am also looking for new partnerships for the upcoming year, if you know of anyone that would be interested, please do let me know!

Another year of ministry & Basileia!!!
This semester concluded my third year on staff with InterVarsity. 3 YEARS!!! It has been an incredible journey and I am thankful for the continual support I have received from you. During our last large group this semester, one of our seniors and exiting VP, Will Pennock, shared about his personal transformation over the past 4 years as he was involved with the ministry on InterVarsity at NJIT. Included in his testimony was the transformation of the chapter. He talked about how during his freshmen year, IV consisted of 2 small groups totaling ~12 members at NJIT. That night, he was speaking infront of 60 students at a large group, in which about 25 of them were NJIT students! WHOOO!!!
God has been extremely faithful to the growth of the chapters at Newark. Here are a few things that we are inviting you to celebrate with us from this school year:

  1. We ended the school year with 159 students regularly involved with the ministry of InterVarsity at Newark. (That's 59 more than last year!!!)
  2. We have seen over 20 students step up to be servers and leaders in our chapters. (that's over double what we had last year!)
  3. At this current moment, we are planning to send 48 students up to Basileia (18 from NJIT, 16 from RU, and 14 from ECC). WHOOOOO!!!!!!
It has been an extremely exciting year, and it's about to get even MORE exciting! For the first time in my tenure here as staff, we are sending non-christians up to camp!!! say what?!?! That's right, students have invited their non-christian friends to come up to camp with them. This year, we have been searching and learning what it means to cultivate a witnessing community. As a result, students have responded boldly and invited their friends to join us for Basileia. Their desire to see their friends say "YES!" to Jesus is evident as they have made every effort to raise scholarships to help reduce the cost for camp. Over the past month, our student leaders have been able to raise over $3,000 for scholarships!!! Praise God!

We are growing!!!    Inline image 2

As we have been experiencing growth among our students and chapters in Newark, we are also experiencing that same growth among Staff. I am extremely excited to tell you that I have been invited to step up to be the Staff Team Leader of Newark! Now as you know, there's only 2 of us on staff at Newark at this point. (Stephanie and myself). But wait! There's going to be more!!! It is my honor and privilege to introduce to you, Joanna Babiarczyk! She has been provisionally appointed to join our team at Newark =] We are extremely excited to have her and we are praying to get Joana on campus by this coming fall semester. Would you join us in praying for the support that she needs to raise. If you feel led to make a donation to support her, please follow this link and support her today!

2012 Fall Ministry Update

IN OTHER NEWS

Highlights from this fall!

Meet the PR Crew!
The group of students you see in the picture above is our Publicity team. They are under the leadership of Anna (student in the middle with IVCF shirt). Anna has been a highlight to our ministry this fall as she has exploded and continues to wow Stephanie and I with her innovation and her desire to see people meet Jesus and get involved with InterVarsity. The PR crew is in charge of passing out flyers weekly for our Large Group events, as well as updating our new website and Facebook page. She meets weekly with her team as they explore different  ways to get the name of Jesus and IV out on campus. One of the things they did this semester was a flash mob on campus! You can see what they did by watching this video.

Looking for Partners!
With all the awesome stuff God is doing on campus this semester, more time is needed for me to be on campus. But inorder for me to stay on campus full time, I am in need of more financial support. I am currently at 48% of my budget goal for this year. In my 3 years in serving with InterVarsity, this is the first time I am in danger of running a deficit with my fund raising. Will you please pray for God to continually to provide for the financial needs of my ministry. Will you prayerfully consider making a gift today? If you are ready to make a gift, please follow this link and donate today!

Newark Students with Stephanie and I at Big Event 2012 =]

Casting our nets WIDE!

Two weeks ago, 25 Newark InterVarsity Students joined 400 other students in our fall training conference. Of those 25, 12 of them were first year students or joining InterVarsity for the first time on campus this semester, and they are all already plugged in and serving!

These students were a part of our strategic plan of REACHING AS MANY AS POSSIBLE! So far this semester, we have met with 738 students at the campuses of NJIT, Rutgers Newark, and Essex County College. WHOOO!!!!!!

It has been a tremendous blessing to see our students taking risks each week in meeting new people whether it's through passing flyers, updating social media, tabling, spiritual surveys and having spiritual conversations on campus.

Catching the Fish!

Even with our success in casting our nets wide, we are still not seeing the growth that we have hoped for from our strategic planning sessions in the Spring and Summer. Not only are our student leaders are noticing it, even members of the fellowship are!

With that being said, we are in the midst of finding new ways to integrate all these students we have met. One of the things we have been emphasizing is our "plus 1" initiative. Matt, our Large Group coordinator, has invited and challenged every member that comes to our LG meetings to come with a friend each week. In inviting our friends, it will allow trust to be formed and spark curiosity in those who may or may not realize they are seeking a greater truth in life. So would you all continue to pray with us as we see students develop in leadership, as well as invite, partner, and work together to see God's kingdom come at the campuses in Newark!

Speaking of Fish...

2 weeks ago at Big Event, I had the privilege of helping to teach over 130 students on learning the Inductive Bible Study Method by studying the book of Jonah. We spent a day learning how to make observations, interpret scripture, and developing applications that are appropriate based on the text we read. It was soooooooo awesome!!!

The portion I taught was Jonah chapter 2...when Jonah was in the belly of the fish. From the observations and interpretations these students made, 2 applications came up:

1) Have you ever prayed a prayer of distress? How do you expect God to respond? How WILL you react when God does respond?

2) God used a place of death (belly of the fish) as a place of deliverance for Jonah...how are you being called to help those that are in a place of death on campus?

Will you pray with me for these 130+ students as they continue to learn to study scripture, as well as continuing their growth in leadership and how God wants to use them mightily on the campuses in NY and NJ?

Newark Students with Stephanie and I at Basileia 2012 week 1 =]

Thank You!!! (and good news!)

With another year gone by, I want to thank you for all the support in prayer and finance that you have made. I definitely could not have made it through this past year without your support, and for that I am eternally grateful.
With that in mind, I am happy to report that I made through another fiscal year of fund raising. Praise GOD! He is definitely a God of provision and of abundance. Thank you all for your generosity and support. I pray and hope that we can continue to partner together with God's Kingdom work that is happening with Intervarsity at Newark.

Speaking of continuing our partnership, I am also happy to let you know that I have committed to serving an additional 3 years with Intervarsity at Newark. God has been using and blessing me tremendously through the ministry at Newark, and I am extremely honored for His calling for me to serve His kingdom here. My prayer and hope is to invite you to continue our partnership for the things God is planning to do here in Newark. Would you consider making a gift for the next fiscal year?

The budget for the next coming year for both Stephanie and I to be full time with InterVarsity will be a total of $130,000. We are looking for new partners everyday so if you know of someone, please let me know! If you would like to make a gift, you can make a gift by clicking on this link today!

Because YOU were made for something GREAT!

5 days. 250 missions organizations. ONE global community.

Since 1946, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship has hosted the Urbana Student Missions Conference. Nearly a quarter of a million participants have been challenged to seek their place in God’s global mission. Although the world had changed since the first Urbana conference, the mission of InterVarsity and Urbana has remained the same: To cultivate in every student generation a love for God and for His purposes in the world.

Urbana is a tri-annual conference, and it is happening this year! Would you join us and start praying for students, staff,  and young alumni who are discovering their calling to be a part of God's global mission on their campus and work place. If you or someone you know might be interested in attending Urbana, you can go to the official website to find out more info and register today!

If you need a little bit of convincing and reasoning, you can watch a video that I made to help promote Urbana here.

May 2012 Ministry Update

Inline image 1
We Made it!
I can't believe the school year is coming to an end...it felt like yesterday I was just inviting you all to pray for our new school year, our exciting plans, and for your support for the work that was going to happen in Newark. Time definitely flew by this school year, and I am grateful for all the support each of you have made to support the ministry of InterVarsity at Newark.
With that in mind, here are a few things that we want to invite you to celebrate with us from this school year:

  1. We ended the school year with 100 students regularly involved with the ministry of InterVarsity at Newark.
  2. Our Large Group saw an average of 50 students each week.
  3. We had 60 members attend a Small Group Weekly.
  4. About 50 members were involved with our Volunteer Service Opportunities.
  5. We have 25 students attending Basileia next week!
But, we ARE NOT SATISFIED! Why? Because we desire to be a Witnessing Community! There were approximately 22,300 students in Newark this past school year, yet we only had 2 people make a decision for Christ. We saw only 4 non-christians participate in chapter events, and only had 3 events where the Gospel was explicitly proclaimed. We desire to cultivate a witnessing community in Newark and that is going to start with our leadership training at Basileia!

Inline image 3
Cultivating a Witnessing Community.

Yes, it is indeed that time of the year again! This year, I have the privilege of being at camp for 2 weeks to be with Intervarsity students of Newark, as well as NY/NJ,  as they attend our summer leadership training called Basileia. Basileia is Greek for “kingdom”—the kingdom of God! We’ve named our summer training Basileia because we want students to deepen their knowledge of Jesus Christ as King and improve their capacity to be His ambassadors on campus. In addition, this training points beyond college as they will settle in communities, participate in churches and enter the marketplace as kingdom people who make a world of difference.
With that in mind, will you join together with me to pray for students for the coming 2 weeks. (5/11-5/24).
Please pray for:

  • God to come and work in the hearts of students in NY/NJ
  • Stephanie and I as we lead, prep, and  cast vision for a witnessing community in Newark
  • Safety in traveling (it is ~300 miles from Newark)
  • Spiritual, emotional, mental and physical well being of staff, volunteers and students (There will be 25 students going to Basileia from Newark!)
Serving the Name above all names,
Boaz Tingson
